Prioritizing My Inner Child

Prioritizing My Inner Child

September 26, 20254 min read

I’ve been going through a bit of a transformation lately. I’m learning to trust my intuition, to prioritize myself—my wants, my needs, and the things that truly fill my cup instead of draining it.

As a mom of two little ones, my cup hasn’t felt full in a long time. Somewhere along the way, my own needs slipped to the back burner. Growing up, I never had healthy self-care modeled for me, so now I’m doing the inner work to break those patterns and finally create a different story. I don’t want to keep ending up in that familiar place—drained, overwhelmed, and unseen.

One thing I’ve realized I must keep close is the practice of nurturing my inner child—the part of me that lights up at simple joys. For me, that has always been creating art. It doesn’t matter if it’s a masterpiece or a scribble. What matters is the process, not the product. The act of creating is what brings me back to myself.

That’s why this week’s comic is all about caring for that little child inside each of us. Because when we take care of them, we’re really taking care of our adult selves too.

One of the most beautiful pieces of advice I’ve come across in my inner work is this: whenever you’re denying yourself something or being overly critical, imagine saying those same words to your 5-year-old self. Would you really speak that way to a little child? Or would you soften, choosing kindness instead?

That perspective has been helping me rewire the way I talk to myself. Instead of harsh criticism, I’m practicing gentler words—the kind I’d say to tiny, kindergartener me.

I’m also giving myself permission to enjoy the things that brighten my day. These activities aren’t frivolous—they feed my soul. And I deserve to nurture my inner child just as much as you do.

If this resonates with you, I hope you’ll take a moment today to give your inner child a hug—whether through art, play, rest, or simply speaking to yourself with tenderness.

Our time on this planet is finite. Let’s spend it in ways that honor both the grown-up we are and the little one who still lives inside us.

Kind Words for Your Inner Child 🌸

Read these out loud or in your heart whenever you need to remind your younger self—and your current self—that you are loved, safe, and enough.

✨ You are safe now.
✨ You are allowed to rest.
✨ Your feelings matter.
✨ You don’t have to be perfect to be loved.
✨ I see you, and I’m proud of you.
✨ It’s okay to make mistakes—that’s how we grow.
✨ You deserve joy, laughter, and play.
✨ Your voice matters.
✨ You are loved exactly as you are.
✨ I will always take care of you.
✨ It’s okay to dream big.
✨ You are never too much, and you are never not enough.
✨ I forgive you for not knowing what you didn’t know.
✨ I choose kindness for you, always.

🎨 A Love Letter to Your Inner Child

Here is an art journal prompt to honor that little child inside you who needs grown-up version of you to care for them.

  1. Choose a photo or draw a picture of yourself at age 5–7. If you don’t have a photo handy, simply sketch a little child that represents you.

  2. Around the image, write some of the kind words from the 1-pager—the ones that feel most healing to you right now. Decorate the page with colors, doodles, or symbols that your younger self would have loved.

  3. On the opposite page (or in a blank space), write a short “love letter” to little you. Start with:
“Dear little me, I want you to know…”

  4. Let your creativity flow—paint, collage, or use stickers to make the spread feel playful and safe, just like you would have wanted as a child.

💡 Tip: Don’t worry about making it neat or polished. Let this be messy, colorful, and full of joy. It’s about connection, not perfection.
