Stop Shrinking and Start Shining: Unlocking the Magic of Being Yourself
Have you ever stopped to think about the sheer statistical impossibility of your existence? Among billions of people walking this earth, there is not a single one who is exactly like you. You are a one-of-a-kind creation β a unique blend of experiences, talents, and perspectives.
Yet, despite this incredible truth, so many of us spend so much of our lives trying desperately to be like everyone else. In a world that often rewards conformity, choosing to be yourself can feel like a radical act.
We're taught from a young age that it's safer to fit in, to stay small, and to follow the "normal" path. But being normal is not the measure of a life well lived. In fact, the pressure to conform is often what dims the very brilliance we were born to share.
I talk about all of this in the latest episode of The Playful Art & Heart Podcast.
The Paradox of Individuality
It's a strange irony: we know we're unique, yet we work overtime to hide that uniqueness.
We look at what's working for other people and think, "If I just do what they're doing, I'll be successful and happy." We shrink ourselves to fit into boxes designed by society, our families, or our workplaces, thinking this is the secret to a secure life.
But I don't believe we're here to shrink.
To conform without question is to stifle the amazing light within us.
When we choose the "easy" path of sameness, we often leave our greatest potential untapped. It's a heartbreaking reality that so many of us go through our entire lives without ever opening the box of our true potential.
Imagine what the world would look like if every single person gave themselves permission to embrace their unique gifts. The world wouldn't just be different β it would be better.

Why We Choose to Stay Small
If being ourselves is the key to fulfillment, why is it so hard to do? The truth is, most of us were trained to stay small. We were taught to keep our heads down, not to rock the boat, and to avoid the consequences of standing out. This programming often starts in childhood, where we learn that being "too much" or "different" can lead to judgment or rejection.
I've told myself that staying small was the way to a life well lived, but deep down, I knew that wasn't true. That internal conflict creates a real sense of overwhelm and sadness.
When we ignore our brilliance to avoid the discomfort of being different, we trade our long-term fulfillment for short-term security. Authenticity is the only real path to a life of meaning.
The Comparison Trap
I've fallen into the trap of comparing my journey to those around me, or more like I've fallen into the trap of people around me questioning me β "Why can't you be more like so-and-so who's a successful doctor?" "Why can't you just get a good job and stay there for 40 years like I did?" This comparison is a thief of joy. It leads us down paths that were never meant for us β like the person who goes to medical school because it's expected, only to reach midlife and realize they feel trapped in a life they never wanted.
Finding My Brilliance Through Joy
If you feel lost on the path to self-discovery, here's the simple but powerful compass I keep coming back to: follow your joy.
Following your joy isn't frivolous. It's actually a direct pathway to figuring out your brilliance. Joy isn't something you have to earn. It's your birthright.
Think about what brings you genuine happiness. If you ask ten people what brings them joy, you'll get ten different answers. Those answers are clues.. little breadcrumbs leading you back to your true self. When you give yourself permission to explore what lights you up, you begin to move away from the "sameness" of the world and toward your authentic truth.
Joy is your intuition in action:
Joy is a guide. It points you toward the activities and environments where you can shine.
Joy requires courage. It takes strength to prioritize what makes you happy over what makes you "fit in."
Joy is not selfish. When you're lit up, you have more energy and light to share with others.

Healing the Inner Child
To truly embrace my individuality, I've had to do the work of unlearning. Many of us carry programming from childhood that tells us being ourselves is dangerous. Maybe you were told you were "too loud," "too sensitive," or "not enough" compared to someone else. You learned that hiding your true self was the only way to get a pat on the head.
But I'm not a child anymore, and neither are you. We have the power to revisit that younger version of ourselves and offer her the safety she didn't have.
Imagine taking your inner child to a room where she can talk about whatever excites her without judgment. Let her be too much. Let her be enthusiastic. By validating the parts of yourself you were told to hide, you begin to release the inhibitions that keep you from your full potential.
The High Price of "Normal"
I want to share something personal here. For years, I felt a crushing weight to achieve "normal" milestones β like owning a house β largely driven by my mother's expectations. When I finally achieved it, the fulfillment I expected wasn't there. I realized I'd been chasing a goal to get someone off my back rather than following my own heart.
Living in a new city and a new house, I struggled to fit into the "suburban mom" mold. I wondered why I couldn't just be normal and make friends easily like everyone else. But eventually, I decided to stop trying so hard. I realized I had never been someone who changed herself to be liked β and that was a strength, not a flaw.
The danger of not being ourselves is that we get led down a path that was never meant for us. We end up living a life that's only a fraction of how good it could be. There's a version of your life where things are in flow, where you're deeply fulfilled, where you're reaching your full potential. You can't get to that timeline without first knowing β and accepting β yourself.

Key Takeaways for Embracing Your Individuality
Release the illusion of security. Conformity might feel safe, but it rarely leads to fulfillment. True security comes from knowing who you are.
Listen to your intuition. You have an innate guidance system. Trust the things that feel "right" and "in flow."
Stop the self-deprecation. Set your judgments aside. You were born for greatness, not just to be normal and disappear.
Prioritize play. Play is the language of the soul. It lets you explore your creativity without the pressure of a "productive" outcome.
Accept the journey. You don't have to have it all figured out today. Self-discovery is a lifelong process, and every step toward authenticity is a win.

If I stopped trying to be like everyone else for one week, what would I do instead?
On joy as a compass
What are three things that genuinely light me up?
When was the last time I felt real joy? What was I doing, and who was I with?
What is joy trying to tell me right now that I've been too busy to listen to?
On the inner child
What did I learn as a child about being "too much" or "not enough"? Is that still true today?
If I could sit with my younger self for five minutes, what would I want her to know?
What would it feel like to let myself be "too much" today, on purpose?

What is one small, brave way I can be more myself this week?
What would my life look like if I fully trusted that I am enough exactly as I am?
What am I ready to release so I can make room for my own brilliance?
Shine Authentically
The journey to embracing your individuality isn't always easy. It requires the courage to stand apart and resist the pull of sameness. It means being brutally honest with yourself about what you want, rather than what society expects of you. But the payoff is a life of purpose, meaning, and deep joy.
Remember: you are not here to be a carbon copy of someone else or to lead someone else's version of a successful life. You are here to bring your own unique brilliance into the world.
So take a deep breath, let go of the need to be "normal," and give yourself permission to play, to shine, and to simply be you. The world is waiting for the light that only you can provide.
